Borkhardt Hates You Too
So after leaving Drinking Liberally I headed down to the Paramount where I hooked up with
rikan_feral for a quick Chinese dinner, which included a very nice teas that I think could best be described as a form of lemon honey, perfect for the cold night.
Then we met up with the majority of Jenni's Angels in the foyer of the Paramount to watch our 48hr film competition entry Borkhardt Hates You Too, a superhero movie. Prior to the movie I had one of the lovely choc-covered Kapiti ice-cream's the Paramount does, a maple and walnut one I think I had, which led to
amphigori,
lamprey, and
rikan_feral also purchasing such ice-creams. One would not have wanted to be afraid of crowds, as the foyer got hugely packed as the last crowd left and we tried to get in! It seems odd that so far both times I've met up with
rikan_feral for dinner we've ended up in the Paramount afterwards.
Our movie went down really well, with people laughing at the right times, and whistling at
jenni_talula's red & white PVC superhero costume (which was basically her old Angelic Layer cosplay outfit for those that remember it). The only real competitor was a romance entitled Love Cycle which was slickly produced and had some great casting and acting, as well as being wonderfully funny in places. Especially when the over-weight Maori male lead was rolling around on the nuptial bed dressed in the muti-coloured heart onesies ! One reviewer has already stated that ours and Love Cycle were the top two films in that heat, and that he had trouble deciding the third. I would have to agree.
If pressed, I might have to admit that Love Cycle did seem just a touch more professional than ours, primarily because they had a couple of really good actors, and the editing and filming was not "noticeable". You know how sometimes really good work is good because you don't see it? That's what they had going on. Where as we had the flashy special effects. They also had some good ideas, for instance, their final (and definitely epiloguey) bit of film was played in a "window" while the credits scrolled past, giving them a quite few extra seconds of script time over a plain credits reel.
On the other hand maybe I was just a bit too close to our film, and could see all the bits that didn't quite work, the two shots of crew in camera, the slightly ugly jump between fight scene and aftermath, etc., which other's might not notice. But I loved the comic-book framing sequences at either end of our film. Whichever of our people were responsible for that idea and the implementation of it deserve kudos. It set the tone and genre of the film immediately and simply, as well as giving a nod to Ang Lee. Also the power-up section was nicely done, and having the "zoned out flattie" walking thru the combat making a cup of tea without noticing worked brilliantly. And to think of all the crawling around at Jenni's feet I did to get those few seconds of film ! grin
Unfortunately I had to leave before the heat finished, in order to catch the last train home, so I missed out on the mouse movie.
